I prefer this to the white backgrounds, Robert; what's more, I like the way the background is rendered now.
Good choice of lens and film as well.

Alright so it's technically not an October portrait, but I unveiled it last night (October 1st), I hope that counts. I've been keeping this portrait secret since I took it in May, seems a little odd to post the portrait in May portraits this late in the year.

BTW though, the Flickr version is way more contrasty than your blog post image. Not sure why? Actually, looking at it again, the top and bottom versions on your blog are different too...? The top looks like the Flickr link, the bottom one is less contrasty.

This should probably go to the "Mistake" thread. Ted Grant is a national treasure of Canada. He photographed Prime Minister Trudeau sliding down a banister and Ben Johnson winning the Gold (and then lost it later due to drug violation). Travel photos, Queen Elizabeth, he has done it all. His photography mantra is KISS (Keep it Simple...) Back in the days, he would run around with 3 Leica Ms on his neck, and then one or two Leica R with long lens.

And he's an incredibly generous, funny person. My wife and I had the privilege to share an afternoon with him. The (small format Leica M9) photoset is here: http://richardmanphoto.com/PICS/TedGrant-2014/

It was somewhat surreal that after some niceties, that I brought in my 4x5, and of course I had the wrong film etc. Nevertheless, with the magic of Lightroom, an image can be seen:

Bryan,
I do have two versions of this portrait. The Flickr version (and the main image on my blog) is a scan of the contact sheet print version. At the time I was using a Zone VI enlarger to make contact prints. Green for tones + Blue for maximum blacks. I'm now using an Omega 5XL for my contact sheets because I don't want to use up the last of my Zone VI bulb life on contact sheets. Also I think Flickr sharpens images once uploaded.

The image at the end of the blog is a final low res image of the negative scan I used to print the digital enlargement. I'm scanning my 8x10 images as 2000 dpi and reducing them to be 40x50 inches / 300 dpi for print. My 8x10 portraits would look great printed traditionally as 20x24, but I'm not able to print 8x10 yet. Since I have to scan the images to print my images, I figured I might as well go for the biggest I can do with our school's Canon printer. Very satisfied wit the results, but the clone/healing brush retouching from my v750 scanner at 200% takes 4-7 hours per image. I've got 15 images to do for a show that opens on Nov. 1, and am still working on the first image!

Thank you all for your kind words. It was a humbling experience to photograph George Takei!

Yes, I have gone through several boxes of 4x5" Shanghai with no issues. I buy it from an eBay vendor in Taiwan, Mr. Isaac Chen "isaac.chen". The package arrives in about 2 weeks at my home in Atlanta, Georgia USA.

Here is Mr. Chen's current eBay film page: http://www.ebay.com/sch/Film-/4201/m.html?_ipg=50&_sop=12&_ssn=isaac.chen

For some reason, there is no Shanghai sheet film listed anywhere on eBay. Hmmm...

I know what you mean, it's always a problem with sun light. But it seems that you still have plenty of shadow detail to work it out. Anyway, a LF wedding photo is quite a special treat and they sure will appreciate it.

Just out of curiosity, did you take this in Alsace?

Lauren, its not that thin actually, about @f8. She moved just a nudge, second eye was in focus, so nope. Dont have any devices, so i typically shoot full face or head/shoulders at 8-16 to keep people in, unless i really want special effects :) would love to have head braces, so i can shoot full face collodion on 8x10, but... The last time I shot some large format portraits, I used a long carton roll that I put behind their heads, it was a silly thing to do 'cause the head postures were all wrong (head leant to one side or buried in the shoulders)

I think you're right when we don't have head braces we have no other choice than to trust our models ! :D

My sister and her (now) husband on her wedding last tuesday. While I'm not a portrait shooter, I couldn't resist taking my camera to the wedding. I wasn't the photographer, so I just asked them to step outside for a few minutes during the afternoon into the parking lot in between showers and quickly exposed one sheet for each of them. They don't make for great portraiture, but they are a nice keepsake and I'm pretty happy with the result considering it only took 10 minutes.

Wide angle portraiture! Nicely done, Ari. I could never get the hang of wide angle for anything. I guess we each have our strengths and are wise to play to them. It seems the older I get the longer my lenses get. Maybe I'm just overcompensating. ;)

Thank you, Jonathan; I waver between wide and long lenses, but the general trend has been towards something a normal/longer FL.
I think we're all compensating for something, or we'd all be shooting iPhone pics. :)

Ari,

That's a great example of environmental portraiture and excellent use of wide-angle for this subject. In case he is vain, though he doesn't look like it, the image could be cropped in the middle, making it landscape and not showing a belly that's pronounced slightly by the short focal length. I wish I had started taking pictures of my dad earlier because he passed away soon after I started. I hope you will have many more opportunities and you should go for it.

Peter

Thank you, Peter; I make an effort to get a shot of him every time he visits.
He's 73, but following him around for a day would tire out a guy half his age.
And he's used to that belly, they've been friends for years. :)

You are smart to use every opportunity, one never knows which is the last one. I'm friends with my belly as well, it's nick name is Oyster Graveyard.:) Unfortunately, many people have a less relaxed relationship to their "friends" when shown in pictures.

This is a great portrait of your dad Ari! The lighting, location, and subtle details in the background and his clothing project a real sense of character/personality in this image for me. :)

Not to be taken the wrong way (because I rarely watch the show) but I feel like this could be a still of a character from the show "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" or something.

Thanks again, Peter; what you said about your father is always in the back of my mind, so that's my motivation. There's a similar dynamic at play wrt photos of my daughter, though the reasons are slightly different.

Heck, Ari, I've been fighting dumping more praise on you:)! The portrait of your Dad caught my eye as soon as you posted it. What I'm most impressed by, though, is your consistency with really eye-catching (I'm trying to find some other adjective for things that stand out) portraiture. For a while you were posting wonderful pictures of your wife, then you had a nice series about a relative recovering from cancer (it might have been an Aunt, I'm too lazy to hunt right now.) Given the recent NY Times publication of Nicholas Nixon's "sisters" series, I think your "family" series fits into a certain type of documentary portraiture at a very high level. OK, I'm done gushing, I'm really not turning into an "Ari groupie!"

analoguey - Thanks! It's an inverted scan but I printed the image and it looks exactly the same except for an annoying chemical stain that was left on the negative from a drying rack. (school darkrooms suck sometimes...) And no I didn't burn the foreground to surround the model. This shot happened towards the end of the day when we were finishing up a shoot walking back to our car. I saw the light and asked for just one more photo even though I knew the model was exhausted...so we ran out into the field and made it quick :) I was very happy because I wasn't even the photographer that day lol..I was assisting my girlfriend on a shoot :P

Hi Peter, I just saw this now; you are very kind to say that, I am humbled by such praise.
The photo you refer to is of my step-mother, who is fighting cancer successfully.
After working in commercial photography for a number of years, it's nice to get away from all that and take photos when and of whom I please.
There's nothing more important than one's family, and having a great tool like a view camera begs us to make a grand document of our lives, and what matters most in them.
Thanks again!
