They usually have a black band right behind the hood, as seen here. Some Wollensaks also have that band though. They always have a short hood, and the knurling on the knobs is usually the same. I'll look for a better picture of the knob.

Thanks for that answer :)
How many lenses to compose a Petzval? Four right?
And if any lenses are missing? But sell as a Petzval :(
Generally a B&L Petzval can be demounted, not cimented, and all lenses can be clean separately?

The same way you recognizee any Petzval. Cemented pair up front. Two elements air spaced in the rear. Read http://antiquecameras.net/petzvallens.html

Good luck

A petzval has two separate lenses in the rear, and two cemented (glued) together in the front.

Garrett's advice is a good starting point, but I have a 15" Bausch & Lomb projection Petzval that is all black (with a serial number around the 1,000,000 mark). I bought it online and had no way of knowing what the configuration was until it arrived. Fortunately, it turned out to be as advertised:

I also have a number of B&L "Cinephor" projection lenses that are Petzvals, as well as a few labeled "Cinephor" that are not. It can be very confusing.

But you can't open what you buy.
That's why i asked if there was a way to know, externally.
Dates, First part like this, knob like that, etc etc...

They are most likely Petzvals - but those look like projection lenses, not camera lenses. While projection and camera Petzvals are similiar their values are vastly different.

My guess is both of those are Petzvals since they seem to be rather early examples, but I cannot say with 100% certainty.

What about this one?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Bausch-amp-Lomb-Optical-Co-Portrait-f-5-5x8-Eq-Foc-12-Inch-Lens-/131299128082?_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20131003150253%26meid%3D8defbaabe17247149430fc5452f1d2cc%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D20131003150253%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D8%26sd%3D331328999015&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=uuB0S1%252F0anx6m%252F2iVkwrJ23p26A%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Seems Petzval?
And very expensive in some auctions, that was a good price for it?
No flange, that could be a problem i guess, but seems quite rare?!

Can I ask why the question is only about Bausch & Lomb? Do you think they are better than other petzvals somehow? I'll add to your consternation. Bausch and Lomb, in the early days, ie. 1905 - ish made thousands of petzvals and put other people's names on them. Almost any large photo supply house, like Hyatt, Burke & James, Eastman, Northern Supply, and a hundred others, would have "house brand" petzval's with the house name on it, made by Bausch and Lomb.

To me, almost any petzval looks like almost any other petzval on the film, so who cares who made it. Very little variation. If you're after more of a petzval look, the ones made by Darlot were cheaper back a century ago and seem to have a bit more aberration than some of the others. Bausch and Lomb was the American equivalent to Dallmeyer in quality.
