I haven't been shooting a lot lately, or posting here that much, either.
Just keeping busy, and following the local sports team. :)
I did make it out the other day with my brother as my stooge...er, gracious model, and re-discovered the joys of portability by using a 4x5.
It really does feel miniature after getting used to 8x10, but it's a wonderful format nonetheless.
I would have preferred a longer lens for this, but my longest 4x5 lens right now is the 115, and I will need a 150 or a 180 soon.

That really captured the mood/feeling here VERY well.

I saw him play in Austin last year, now I only drink 'Lone Star'...

One of the first LF images I took after starting shooting 4x5 for the first time in almost 20 years, a portrait of my wife taken on her birthday in New Orleans. I shot it a few months ago but I only just got a scanner (Epson V750) that does 4x5 a couple days ago (still learning so not the greatest scan, I just used VueScan on default settings with no tweaking).
Uneven developing on this one too due to a mishap - I use a Jobo 3010 on a motor base which has worked fine so far but I turned my back on it for only about a minute and it walked off the base about 3/4 of the way through the development, spilling a good amount of the developer (thankfully I do this in a tub!). Definitely learned my lesson about staying there to watch it!

I like that kind of picture with a 4x5 inch camera. The 210mm is great to do such a job, not too big but long enough to take pictures "sur le vif".
First one looks great for me , the second is too centered, a bit more of his legs could be fine.

It is a live image on the phone. Not sure about ironic statement. This image was her idea.
Truth was, the evening light was fading so I needed to shoot wide open, hence the "trendy bokehshht". At least the old Symmar 180 does TBS quite well :)

Cool idea, I thought it was ironic because the little phone was making the sharp image while the view camera was mostly out of focus. I didn't think it was live - using the phone's camera facing her - simply because I couldn't see any evidence of the building behind her.
Thanks!
Shows that the iPhone copes with low light better than HP5+ and fits in my pocket easier than a 4x5.

vorgonyi,
I like the portrait, but if I may make a suggestion: set up the picture with the eyes on the lens axis, and then focus on the catchlights. Then use front rise to frame the face exactly as you have done. Sharpness falls off in all directions from the lens axis, so this will retain the sparkle in the eyes.
A lovely picture, in any case.

Love it; the tone, mood and pose are perfect.
vorgonyi,
I like the portrait, but if I may make a suggestion: set up the picture with the eyes on the lens axis, and then focus on the catchlights. Then use front rise to frame the face exactly as you have done. Sharpness falls off in all directions from the lens axis, so this will retain the sparkle in the eyes.
A lovely picture, in any case.
Very informative, can you explain that in more detail.
Cheers.

Well, this really applies to soft-focus lenses like the Imagon, although there may be poorly corrected lenses (Petzval, maybe?) that would benefit from the same technique. My experience is with the Imagon, Verito, Hyperion, Kodak Portrait and Heliar; in every case, the softness increases as one moves away from the lens axis.
The idea is that a typical head shot has the eyes about a third of the way down from the top. If the lens is centered on the film, the sharpest area will be somewhere below the eyes. In vorgonyi's picture, the nose is sharper than the eyes, at least on my monitor. He may well have focused on the eyes, but the depth of field was enough that the nose, on the lens axis, is sharper than the eyes will ever be (because they are farther from the lens axis).
So: center the lens on the film, position the entire camera to center the eyes in the picture, and focus on the catchlights. Now, using front movements only, shift the image on the film until the composition looks right, and make the exposure. This leaves the eyes as the sharpest features in the picture, which is what one usually wants.
Does this help?

http://www.lenbruffett.com/LFforum/a002sm.jpgI have always been impressed with Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" painting - so I made an image using a model with a similar body type as the model in the painting and a grassy hillside near my home - the actual print has detail through all of the high values of the dress. I didn't feel the need for other elements in the image (the painting has some farm houses in the far field) and I made images with the model not showing the side of her face - but prefer the image I have shared.
Halide, I really like that. I don't comment often as I am still experimenting with LF and have nothing to offer, but I felt I had to compliment you on this portrait. I've used Wyeth for inspiration in a couple of studio shots myself. I have always loved this particular work by Wyeth and if I still lived in Livermore, I'd probably try it myself.
Great job Deval; I know first hand what a task it is to get a 5 yo to pose AND stay in one place for a LF portrait!
Len, I had a print of that on the wall growing up (Christina's world) and stared at it regularly, I think you have done a good job. I am about 10 miles away from the actual site of the painting, and some artistic license has been used with regard to distances to building, etc.. No harm in choosing to have more differences and making it your own.

This image is originally from about 1999 but I never did anything with it until this May when I took a Polymer Photogravure workshop from Clay Harmon at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts. Great workshop and teacher. I had a lot of fun and learned a great deal from Clay and the other participants. (I'll post the resultant gravure in the alternative process thread (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?51078-post-alternative-techniques&p=1140842&viewfull=1#post1140842).)
This scan is from an 8x10 contact print, probably exposed using an old convertible 300mm Symmar on a B&J Grover. It was taken in Greenville, Michigan at the then Michigan School for the Blind and Deaf summer Art Camp TUSMEHETA (ToUch SMEll HEar TAste). I participated for four years and met several great groups of kids including some that had come to the States from Belarus and Russia for medical treatment in connection with the Children's Chernobyl Project.

Thank you JWC5 and jp498 for the complements on my image and sharing your insight. I wasn't sure if I was going to be chastised for mimicking another artist's work - But I have seen many instances where even Ansel Adams drew inspiration from other photographers work.

I met Peachy Pie at Anime LA 2014. She is a full time student majoring in art design, and has been going to anime cons for 5 years. While she makes her own costumes, she calls herself “pretty new” at sewing.
Peachy Pie: “The best part of cosplay is getting it done, wearing it, and becoming the character."
"If you play the game (Zelda games), Princess Agitha seems to have Aspergers. She is quirky and seems to be shy... she has “something”, like the positions of her hands. She won't really make eye contact very much. I have Aspergers myself, but it's not really bad. If people ask, I would tell them... Now that I am older, I can see from her that that's how I was.”
It took me another 5+ months to connect with Peachy Pie to photograph her "out of costumes."

We met Corey (a.k.a. Big Bird) at RJ's Drive-In Restaurant in Burns, Oregon. Corey is from Tacoma, Washington, and moved to Burns three years ago. Today was his first day off in 12 days from working the night shift at the local Safeway. He planned to spend his day hunting coyotes. He is a proponent of the right to carry arms. "Out here, you need guns. You go out of town and there's badgers, wild pigs, coyotes, bobcats. Badgers are mean, but their legs are short, so they can't jump."

Lynn owns A Bit of Europe antique store in John Day, Oregon. Originally from northern England, Lynn has owned her shop for 20 years. As she organized a pile of old linens, Lynn commented on how she used to love to throw seven-course dinner parties back in England, where people would stay up till 2:00 am and finish the night with a pot of coffee and some brandy. On having dinners here in the U.S., she says that "people here just want to come over at 5:00, have a hamburger, and leave." On being an antiques dealer, Lynn says: "You don't have to be a thief to make a living. I like to be fair."
