Stumbled across this while web surfing. I don't know anything more about it but I'd like to tip my hat to Yu Xiang. Could he be the elusive Chamonix Camera Mountaineer/Founder?

Some of the other photos in the set are a good insight into their operation. Thanks for posting.

Something's fishy..... It's obviously a cool camera, but the aspect ratio sure doesn't look like 24x32 to me. That would look like 3x4. This looks quite a bit more panoramic in shape, if not size. My first thought was that it's a 12x20, but that's not right as it's clearly larger and the shape doesn't quite look like that, either.

Notice, too, the grid on the ground glass. Judging from Mr. Yu's (did I get that right?) hand, they could be 1-inch squares and if so, the short dimension looks more like 16". The long side could be 28", but my eyes grow blurry and I am tired.

Whether it's 24x32 or 16x28 or something altogether different, it is quite impressive. But just curious since I was surprised by the shape...

Link won't work for me...

I know Chamonix makes a 20x24 camera so I'm sure they do custom work too...

Will's in Maine. Long way from California. Closer to China (which is just northeast of Augusta, on the way to Bangor).

I still want to know why the format looks so long. Am I really the only one who sees that??

I'm just glad I got to see it! The link doesn't work for me so thanks for posting this last one...

And yes, seems the student isn't that bad at all, but then she may have an excellent teacher!

What an image!

Bet you needed a Yak to haul the camera around Tibet as it requires 3 tripods, one for the lens alone. Speaking of which can you tell us a little about the lens such as focal length, make, etc?

It's actually 4 tripods.... Look closely.... Hah!

tgtaylor

Yep, 4! - 2 for the rear standard alone which makes since for a camera that big. Man, I thought lugging the 810G around was a hassle but after a couple of days with the Hass the G would be like a 35mm!!
