A series of Portrait of Surfers, Windsurfers, Kitesurfers and also Skateboarders.

I already started to post some of the picture of this project in the Harmand Direct Positive paper section and also in the montly portrait section but i think its better stop bothering you all and keep that pictures in this thread only for the ones that, maybe, could be interested.

Your comments and critics are absolutely wellcome.

This 3 picture were taken all the same day. It was the first session of this project. All the picture were taken on Harman Direct Positive Paper. I developed the first 4 picture directly there at the moment also to have an idea of the exposure. All the other were made with the same settings of speed and aperture. The preflashing of the paper was made at home. I took with my just 10 chassis for a total of 20 picture to shot. From this series there are just few interesting but they are all very very similar for pose and location. But we took the picture at the end of the afternoon after a strong storm and lot of rain. I was ready to go home with just the 4 test picture of the morning. Test pictures that was too contrasty. In the afternoon the light was much better.

+1, except I believe a better name for the thread, even more specific if possible, might be Alessandro Bocchi's Pictures of Italians Gone Surfing.:D

...they are all very very similar for pose and location.

I think the similarity of pose and location can be a strong constraining element for a series, so that the primary difference in the resulting shots are the individual traits of the person being photographed. Consider the Richard Avedon portraits as similar example.

Thanks ROL I agree with you that the name of the thread could be much better and explain the contents in a more specific way. But I prefer not include my name in the thread and at the same time i wish other person will contribute and upload portrait of surfers, kiteboarder ad skateboarders too. But please keep suggest a more appropriate name, and all other suggestion that are absolutely appreciate. I am a novice and i still have everithing to learn, starting from my english of course.

Thank you Dan Dister and also Ckagy for your comments that i really appreciate. With this picture it is almost finished the first series that i took. Maybe there is one or two other nice picture to share.
The second series was taken at the sea this time not in a lake lake the previous one. But not exactly at the sea, on the beach, because there was too much light. The sun was very intense and the picture on direct positive paper need a restricted range of tonality. So i took the second series in a little park, under the shadows of the three.

If you don't mind me asking. The gritty intense look from the direct positive paper is pretty consistent and creates a unique and memorable style; why are you using that instead of something smooth and moderate in contrast like Jock Sturges' portraits at the beach? The direct positive is probably nicer to hold than have on the computer I'd guess. Do you process them on site?

Thank you for asking. The first time i develope the pictures directly on site, but just the first 4 pictures just to have an idea of the speed - aperture to use, because you kow, you cant correct anything after the shot. Maybe you can add a little more preflashing if they are too much dark but usually you have to decide in the moment you click.
I like the direct positive paper because of its instant result that could be show to the subject and make him part of the magic of the development process. I love the work SurfLand of Joni Sternbach and the positive paper in my opinion could be a easy to do variant of her work. The same long exposure time the same large format camera with modern but also old lenses.
The originality of the positive paper let you make an original irreproducible picture. The scan is just to give an idea but its pretty ugly than the original ones.
Of course i started also to take some shot on film but remember that i am a novice in photography and even more in large format camera photography.

Hello Giovanni. I am at home in this days with a real strong tootache that make me feel estremely bad. I meet Mr Umicini only one time and i really wish to know him better. I am happy that he still remeber that work that we did last september.
There was me and anothe friend of mine called Filippo Leonardi. We used a large format camera size 5x7 and we made undred portarits on direct positive paper during that 3 days. This was his portrait.

when I was first looking around for a 5x7 field camera, eventually settling on a Linhof Tech, one of the 'projects' I considered was 'surfers'.. like fresh off their session

I consider them along the lines of the last of the cowboys

now..if I wasn't so lazy..I'd have been shooting this for a couple years already - -

but..since I am too lazy.. I'm glad you are doing it..and doing it right

Thank you very very much. I also think at them as the last of the cowboys like you say. Cinsider also that Italy is not exactly a surf land but there are some and i get really impressed of their communities. I am at the beginning of this project and now that will come back spring and summer again i will keep shooting picture to them.

The second picture was taken on film and not on direct positive paper. It was taken on ILFORD FP4 - 125 ASA - size 4x5" and Developed with ILFORD ILFOSOL 3 1+9 - 4 minutes and 15 seconds at 20° C

You essentially have the same setup I do! Hah! Same camera / tripod, but I have to use a L adapter instead of a built in L standard.

Alessandro - the shot on FP4 is very nice. The differences between shooting on direct positive versus on film are pretty clear, however I can see how both have their uses, depending on the situation.
