I have mostly scanned with my own Epson flatbed scanner - works rather well - BUT many of my images are much larger than a scanner and in that case I use a digital camera to take a picture of the picture...

In short: I think my smallest Bromoils are about 2x3" and the biggest are 20x27" ca....

So I have a lot of 35mm film,including some unperforated color film that I had no idea what to do with, so I came up with the bright idea of popping in some adapters to shoot 35mm in my Horseman 6x12 back. I made the film wind onto another 35mm bulk-load cartridge, so when I'm through the roll I just wind it until it stops, open the back and snip the leader, and load up the next cartridge.

It worked really well and I'm getting better at guessing the right framing/focus. Here's a shot from earlier today. More are in the scanner. Not sure I was going to like the vertical but it came out pretty cool.

I agree. It looks both classic and modern all at once. Your experience with color negative film really shows in the precise exposure and scanning, too.

Would you show us the brace? I'm thinking of building/buying one and just wondered what your friend made.

I was watching an old Western on TV the other day that featured a photographer of the 1800s. The actor had a stand with head brace as a prop which was a fairly simple "U" shape made of a metal bar stock. Any blacksmith of the era (or today) could make one.

This kid was so much better and well behaved. I decided to try a new lighting set up to see how it would play out. I usually have my Bowens Prolite with either a soft box or umbrella. This time I wanted to try something lighter and portable and used the Quantum T2 with an umbrella.
I quickly saw two problems with this. First is not having a modeling light to see what you are doing. I played by the rules but couldn't see exactly were the shadows dropped and whether I had catch lights. Second (and this bums me out more) is her pupils are wide open due to lack of light and she actually has beautiful bright blue eyes.

Simplest thing is to hook up small led flashlight to flash head so it points same direction. You won't be able to judge intensity, as with cheap studio strobes (good ones got tracking modeling light), but you can judge cacthlights. Likewise you can use it to narrow pupils (or just do quick pre flash with trigger). There are two schools of thought on pupils and some consider it more intimate when pupils are dilated while others like to have more color in iris.. ;) Ones never agree with others ;)

I like it so far. Time will tell how it does with more contrasty conditions, and what kind of reciprocity it has. The emulsion is extremely soft when wet, but seems okay when dry. But the film scans wonderfully for me, and considering the price, I think (for me) it's the way to go right now.

Thanks Jim! I did dump a lot of strobe power into the room to get the high key look I was after. Three lights, one bounced off the ceiling above/behind her, one bounced off the rear wall behind the camera for fill, and then an Octa for a key light.

Haha! Funny you should mention that. That was exactly how I explained it to them so they would all participate.

What isn't immediately apparent in the photo is that this is an incredibly marshy bog. Pretty much everywhere out there is ankle deep mud, or worse. I had to carry most of the kids and place them in the scene before going back to the camera to take the image. :)

Thanks! that was my main concern. People tend to arrange themselves as in a soccer team photo. I kept telling them to spread out and turn to show a little profile.
The little one was desperately crying 2 minutes earlier but having the father dressed like that really helped. The girls also dressed nicely, it was cold and windy!
I only did two sheets, in different locations. A bit stupid and daring on my part but both came out well.
It was supposed to be 7-9 people total.

what I do when I can..is carefully set focus while an assistant holds a string that is tied at one end to the tripod, to right where focus is on the subject...

they they ..you now.. mark the string or put a clamp on it at that point

then..from then on in..I don't focus.. I get the model to move until they are at 'string focus'.. and when the model is posed and in focus..the assistant gets out of the way and I trip the shutter

Any pointers is greatly appreciated, composition, lighting, camera, everything. This photo has a lot of potential but I feel it's lacking in just about every department. Excuse the dirty negative, my coathanger dryer gave way and it fell on the ground. Also my developing is shite, I seem to get real hit & miss results with stand development. (HP5+ in R09 1:100 1 hour)

Alex, if you want consistent results, lose the stand development. There's a reason that time + temperature was the way it was done for 100 years or so in the period when photographers had to be sure they were going to get something or lose a customer.

I like the picture; it's not as bad as you think. As a general rule, it's a good idea to keep people away from backgrounds--I think you'd like the picture better from a couple of angles if you'd done that. The background would have been darker, and it would have been less visible and intrusive. Just mask it out with your hands on the screen, and you can see things get immediately better.

My advice would be to get Mortensen's "pictorial lighting" and start trying things in it.

Start with one person/model and get good with that before doing couples or groups. Use a DSLR for practice if you want.

With this image, the background and tshirt is part of the photo, but not contributing to it. Looks like you tried to make the shirt become less with the tilt. But composition is a better way regardless of format. The couple both have nice hair too which should be lit to show it off a little better. Just like a landscape or street photo, every part of the frame is important and you have to think about that just as much as the people who look nice on the groundglass.

Well it's 150mm at f2.5 with a distance of less than 1.5m (can't remember exactly)... the DOF is quite thin and difficult to control properly.

However, I think I got the focus right on the spot, taking my time with a loupe, and the model is a pro so she really didn't move. The other shots I did (with a Xenar 150/f5.6) were totally great, but both shots from the Hektor came out like this, so I have to put it down to the lens.

Moreover, this film was a bit overprocessed, and this may account for some loss of sharpness (although, let's face it, it's the lens - all of my photos with this lens are somewhat soft (https://www.flickr.com/search/?q=150mmf25&m=tags)).

I just applied a bit of sharpening (I had done no sharpening during scanning) and replaced the photo, now it seems a bit better.



It looks like you used a large reflector right behind you?

I used a single Bowens 500w studio flash, standing about 3 meters behind me and bounced largely on the ceiling and a bit on the wall behind me (small space here). No umbrella or softbox, just the bounce out of the ceiling and the room walls. :-)

They Hektor shots were two stops over-exposed, the Xenar shots were properly* exposed.

*: definition of "proper" - I exposed at 100 ASA when i should have been exposing at 25-or-less. I then developed for 15mins at 30c instead of the normal 8mins. the extreme push-process got the Xenar shots perfect and the Hektor shots overexposed. I tend to experiment a bit. :cool:
