This is more of a test to see how skin looks with blue sensitive film. As I expected not so great, maybe better with older men. Never with women.
It didn't help to under expose it either.

This one is my favorite of the two. The line of her cheek and chin and the flow of her hair complement the neckline of her shirt. It's a lovely effect.

Thanks Ari!

Stephanne,
To quote a famous line from the musical "The Music Man," in the song "Rock Island, "You have gotta" know the territory."
You certainly do...and these portraits are tremendous, respectful examples of how a photograph is both "Given," as well as "Taken."

Thank's y'all. I didn't expect them to be any good. She wouldn't stop moving around and making faces. Shot a few quick ones without paying much attention.

Stehei, what are you trying to get different? Not specific to that lens, but I mention what I'd do. There seems to be no real plane of focus on her body, just to the top 2/3 of her head. Get the camera standards vertical and zero out the movements and not mess with that unless you have everything else under control. I'd want to show curves and texture of her more, but that's an aesthetic choice - yours really stands out unique. Get Mortensen's "pictorial lighting" book and employ his "basic lighting" to give more shape and shading to the skin showing. If the woman doesn't pose much, you might warm her up with a DSLR too before shooting some film. Her choice of black clothing either means she actually like black or is insecure about her body (like many women wear black leggings to show less of their shape). It might be easier to have subtle contrast if she's wearing a gray.

I think this is really good Ramiro. So much undiluted, honest, personality! And besides that, the lighting, the pose, everything just plain works, and helps to keep focus on that amazing face.

I took it to mean images shared for the first time in February 2014. I don't think the rules, as such, are quite so prohibitive.

Ramiro; That is a wonderful photograph of Laia. I was thinking about it in the context of the long thread in "On Photography" about the Chuck Close portraits. There was a lot of discussion about whether his portraits would have been noteworthy had they not been photographs of well-known personalities. But your Laia portrait stands out despite the fact that none of us know who Laia is, because her attitude shines through the photograph and just about forces us to look at it and think about it. Great work!

I plan to do more next week with another girl. Laia was actually not this serious. She was jumping around the place and laughing non stop. She just got like this when I asked to stay still. Then she really got mad when I refused to do one of her with a stool on her head.
This is really what she is like:

Thank you, Jim and Jim! I really appreciated it! I think I'm "starting" to dial in my exposures for UV box when combined with ambient light, to get a decent "range" with collodion, which is always a challenge. Of course the range isn't expanding, but I'm getting better soft/uniform light so as to minimize the problems with range. Not well stated.

Ed ... I dropped that image into photoshop, cropped off the edges (and artifacts) ... with no other changes ... and the image looks like it is emerging from a dream.

Are the halos a developing artifact or photoshop?
I dodge and burn in LightRoom; the halo is there when I want some separation from the background in a dark-on-dark area.
If I don't want the halo, I dodge/burn more precisely.

So did you fly with the film, and if so, was it in the checked luggage or carry-on?
The film was flown from the US to Sweden by someone other than me so I don't know how it was handled on the flight. I don't think this person is aware that xrays damage film and it didn't cross my mind either. Oh well, not much else to do than order new ones. It was "only" 20 sheets but still. I'm really liking the large format experience so far anyway :)

Okay, just wondering. Conventional wisdom is that carryon baggage gets only a low dose of radiation, whereas checked luggage gets the high dose, so wanted to see if this could be correlated to the checked luggage problem.

Thank you for the nice words Monty. You've described exactly what I like about this image. The shoot was awful though. I was so mad after it I had to make me a large gin&tonic.
The word you mention was literally "no" which she replied to everything I asked her to do, and I am not demanding at all. I thought they would all be out of focus since she kept moving on purpose every time I focused.
I never crop my images. I want to think it will force me to compose better next time.
Thank you all :)

Another headache. Starting to wonder if it's worth it.

I appreciate that you have gin and tonic ready at home when you need it; I would have had to go out to the local bar, thus making me even more upset.
Speaking of "NO", my friend Tony used to have three "NO"s regarding photography:
No pets
No kids
No weddings

Shit's so bad in my country I am doing all three (four if you count the gin&tonic).

Couldn't you bribe her with a treat, or say "if you hold still, your mom will like the picture" or such? I don't shoot kids much, except my own, and they know to hold still.

I have found the only thing that really works is bribery - if you do X then you can have Y
Girls always have a long list of things they want
However you managed - you have achieved a fabulous photograph
Good luck
Martin
I photograph my own kids. I have better luck when they are not tired or hungry. Can't skip meals to pose. Can't do it right before bed. That said, I like that portrait.

I have to practice bribery. It caught me off guard, she's done ads so I thought she would be used to it. Her parents were there trying to get her to cooperate. If they couldn't make it I doubt I would.

Yes, wonderful. But I can't make my eye not wander away on the seam in the wall that attaches to the man's head. Maybe just me. Probably a photographer thing since we've all looked at our shots and thought 'wish I'd seen that'

Thank you all!
Jim, I'm working on it. I am thinking how to make all the back ground one piece. Yes, I do not like it at all, but till now I haven't figured out how to transform it, with what...
If anybody can help me I'll be grateful!

Photoshop's healing brush.
BTW, nice portrait. I really like both the pose and the lighting. Would you care to tell us about the lighting?
Thank you.

Hello Atlanta Terry, photoshop's healing brush does not work here.
The lighting is the most simplest that you can imagine, the window of my living room.
