The balance feels off on this one. And I didn't find a single ruby at Ruby Beach, WA. I think it's time to go back there but this time with my pano camera.

I like it cropped from the bottom to eliminate much of the foreground and all of the trunk on the lower right. That seems to draw things in for a better composition IMHO.

Tuco, that would be a fantastic place for some environmental portraits! With a pano or 6x9.
Maybe with a model named Ruby? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y01fP1GFJgk

I've been snowshoeing across a frozen marsh. It's not walkable except when frozen, unless you want stinky salty mud up to your knees. Being that the water is salt water, it freezes differently and melts differently than normal. It looks like plastic, but it's fragile ice. One of those winter walks where you plan your steps not to destroy anything you want to photograph. The next tide destroys it all anyways. These are a little nicer full screen. I think I will have to print one or more of them.

Nice work JP! The middle one really works for me.
Just don't know why I always get rid of my square format cameras?I love that way of seeing at times. Oh well It'll be my next most unused camera.

jp
14-Feb-2018, 17:18
Thanks Louis; I like square format perhaps the most. I don't have to think about whether what I see is a vertical photo or a horizontal photo. It's just one shape always. Makes organizing what I see or want to see in the frame simpler. When sufficiently abstract, I have to think when I scan or print which way is up. Only downside is that displaying square photos is kind of unusual. I usually use a vertical frame with a custom cut square mat window or a square frame.

Fangel: Good lighting choices, but would you consider cropping off some of the left side? I think it would be more effective.

Meanwhile, here's a 1947 BMW R35 for contrast. Tomorrow I'm off to see if I can get a good frozen waterfall photo. Hope I don't slide into the stream!

24-Feb-2018, 07:06
Thanks chassis and Randy. Yep, roll back - I have a few traditional holders but have little interest in shooting with anything but roll film. Had 3 backs with me - one 6x9 w/ Acros, one 6x7 with Velvia, and another 6x7 with some Tech Pan I am testing that I was given. It was nice cranking the rollback and plowing through shots in this quickly-changing situation. Layers of fog/clouds were rolling through and obscuring the view. Technically my Pentax 67ii would've been a better choice for speed but I didn't feel like lugging it. The Century is awesome for lightweight shooting!! And multiple film backs!

I have that lens and it is really nice. I'd use it more but its something I don't want to carry around in general. And on a Pentax 67 you pretty much need two tripods or a tripod and a mono pod. One for the lens and one on the cantilevered body. But you can support the body while on the lens mount against some of that vibration by holding it if the shutter speed is fast enough.

This one works best for me. The dappled light is nice. The oak and eucalyptus foliage create a nice effect. Similar to AA's portrait of a woman in her garden, in either The Negative or The Print.

Thanks, Leigh, cassis, Jim. Yes, I was aware of the reflection issue on the second one, Jim. I'm not sure I have a polarizer for that lens--I will have to dig around and see. Sometimes I like the additional abstraction from the reflections in window images, but they don't do a whole lot for me here. Thanks again, all.

This past Sunday I woke up bright and early to go to Congaree National Park, southeast of Columbia, SC. This park is stunningly beautiful and I really need to go camp for a spell there during the rainy season. I want to see the woods flooded, which apparently happens regularly.

The early-morning light was fantastic and I blew through several rolls of Acros. Here's two of my favorite images from the first roll I developed this morning.

Excellent, I imagine you could spend a lot time exploring that part of the world--but maybe only between December and early March.:) FWIW, "The Congarees" was really the crossroads of the "back parts" of Carolina, lying as it did at the junction of the Catawba and Cherokee trading paths--John Lawson's A New Voyage to Carolina might spark your imagination for your next trip there.

Thanks for the suggestion! I am used to hiking in south GA / north FL in the summers (a.k.a. every month not in those ranges :)) so I am used to the heat/humidity/mosquitoes. I would love to see the algae bloom at this park and wade through the cypress.

Here's one more from later in the day, on the elevated boardwalk area:

That's a great trip--the first one ticks all the boxes, but for some reason I suspect the second will make the most satisfying print for you. Otherwise, if you get the chance and have a little time, Savage Gulf a bit north of there is great to explore as well. I will warn you though that a summer thunderstorm will turn that sandstone to glass--hard Vibram soles had me doing the "hog on ice" thing for miles.:)

Yes I like that one a lot. I will have to see if a large print will properly convey the huge rock wall. Really neat place. I saw Savage Gulf on the map, there's a lot of places in that area that look great. Next trip...

El Rastro is the most popular open air flea market in Spain. It is held every Sunday. Although there is a main street dedicated to Market stalls (predominately clothing) the side streets contain the real "treasures". A great variety of products (new and used) can be found at el Rastro.

I went for a hike one day during a gentle snow. Very peaceful. For some reason, I forgot my meter. I shot a roll nicely exposed, then as the day dimmed, I didn't guess my light well enough. Got home and it was lighter inside than outside, then I realized the day really flew by and the last two rolls would be a bit thin. Indeed, but they scanned better than I expected. Low contrast and low shadow detail is nice once a while to show the time of day and mood in the woods.

Thank you, that's kind of you to say.

Austin, absolutely wonderful photograph!!
Thank you. I appreciate that.

Austin, you are adapting well to the format of the "new" camera! Great photo.
Thanks. My usual camera has been in the shop for weeks, and is most likely dead, so I don't have much choice! Maybe it's good though in a way, to exercise different camera "muscles."

Agreed but beware of the guard cat!
That was one of the biggest cats I've ever seen. She was friendly though.

Investigated a couple places today near where I live. I am calling these "Secret Falls" because they are out-of-the-way falls just barely inside National Forest lands - hard to get to as there are no signs and you have to pass through private drives and such. This is the first falls, inside a gorgeous old-growth forest with lots of potential. Going back tomorrow too...

Ha, I would keep that to myself, too--most of our stands in the GSMNP are a minimum of 70 or 80 years old, but you can still tell the areas that managed to escape the saws. FWIW, I was kicking around in some pretty nice light yesterday--hope it was as good on your side of the hill.:)

It was an accident that I underexposed two rolls of 120 a couple weeks ago at dusk when I forgot my light meter and it got darker quicker than I estimated, but I'm really liking the mood. Again proving tmy2 doesn't have any particular look but it's how it's used and developed.

Love that last photo Austin. The worker and the reflections in the window add quite a bit.

I visited a local island for work during a snow storm a couple weeks ago. The ferry has lots of neat shapes that look great in snow. Sorta Steerage inspired but people aren't necessary. The 2nd is an accidental double exposure. But I like it. It's kinda gone cubist on me.

In Cochrans Creek (right after I fell in, oops...luckily didn't soak anything except my pants :)).

Pali's 6x14 camera w/ 90mm Rodenstock, Acros 100:

http://www.garrisaudiovisual.com/photosharing/cochran-9865ss.jpg

This little adventure was supposed to be to Cochrans Falls, but the last mile or so of this really remote trail is basically rock climbing and tree scrambling. At the final ascent, I couldn't find the cabling to get over the rocks, plus the rain lately has made the creek overflow and therefore the rocks were wet. Best left for another day (apparently a year or two ago someone took quite a fall and had to be airlifted out of there).

In Cochrans Creek (right after I fell in, oops

That is nice--I never seem to like the 6x9 or 6x17 look, but 6x12 (and now, Pali's 6x14) really checks a lot of boxes. (FWIW, I keep wanting somebody to tell me what would be wrong with a Horseman HD with a 135 Sironar N tucked away and a 6x12 film back...seems like you'd have normal to (very) wide sorted in a very small package.:))

At any rate, a bit more unsolicited advice from a backcountry flyfisherman--I'd think about investing in a pair of wading boots with sticky-rubber soles. Simms and Chota both make pretty agile models that you can hike in pretty easily.

I love the near-far relationships here, and the backlit far stack.

Sometimes when I'm wading I feel like I'm in the way, but it's usually people with cell phones making a snap. I do move out of the way if there's a lot of folks and then shoot when no ones around. I'm guessing a popular place like your image though, there is lots of photographers all the time?

Yes, lots of people. When I setup my tripod in front of the rock waiting for the Sun to go behind one of those stacks, no one was at this end of the beach. But soon there was group of people around me. I didn't think anyone would like the high contrast of looking into the Sun. Go figure.

These were in late February (with the Rolleiflex) and I thought winter was over. We got bombed with snow in March... The photos still have the end of winter feel though.

I like the dew on the trees in the first one Jason. It reminds me of mornings here a few months ago. When the sun would rise the fog would condense onto the trees and glisten in the light for about 15 minutes, and then it burned off or fell. I tried to capture it one morning with my Rolleiflex, off our back porch (on the ground looking up you couldn't see it):

I've been working non-stop doing seasonal photography work, but I had a day off and so went on an exploratory hike to a little-known shelter just off the AT. Found some gorgeous views including a mountaintop meadow with pretty much a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape - quite a rarity here. I am absolutely camping on the top next time there's a clear night and shooting some startrails.

I also luckily brought along my hammock, tarp, etc. to test my full pack and how I did with the weight, as there was a huge downpour for an hour that came out of nowhere. That's the AT for you.

Anyway, here's a couple photos I shot today, hot off the scanner. Century Graphic 2x3 w/ Singer 6x7 back, 80mm f/2.8 Xenotar, Acros 100, Pyrocat:

Nice light, nice lines tuco!

Last year the Rhododendrons on the AT didn't bloom at all. I saw exactly one blooming plant on a backroad somewhere. I read there has to be the right amount of rain and sunlight to get them to bloom, which I think is uncommon down here.

tuco
9-May-2018, 20:05
Thanks Bryan. It use to be the flowers would fall off shortly after bloom because the bees came around immediately. But now the Rhododendrons stay in bloom for weeks because there are few, if any, bees. It's been over a week now and I haven't seen one honey bee yet.

Couple of weeks ago we had a freak hail storm. Wasn't even supposed to rain but a cell just bubbled up out of nowhere and pelted the house with more hail than I've seen in a decade. The yard looked like it had snowed.

On the porch was lots of hail and some leaves arranged nicely by the wind, so I had to pop a couple of frames. Century Graphic 2x3, 103mm Trioptar, Acros, Pyrocat:

Bryan; love the hail/leaf photo! Captures well how delicate and short lived the hail is.

Here's a few of the end of winter. Late March. Still plenty of low angle light and mood but the light feels warmer. For the first photo, I noticed it then the sun went away behind a cloud. I stood in one spot for about 20 minutes patiently waiting for the sun to reappear. It did for a few seconds here and there and I got photos here and there while the sun was partly veiled by cloud and not too strong.
