Epson 1640 XL

We just got this scanner where I work, and I've been using it scan some of my bw 4x5 negs (mostly for editing purposes, and possible the web). If I start doing color, though, I may experiment with using it for final art scans.

Right now I'm playing with the various options in the Epson Scan software. There are options for different levels of unsharp masking. Are there advantages/disadvantages to sharpening in the scan stage vs. sharpening in photoshop? Usually sharpening is the last thing I'll do to an image .. so for now I've turned the option off. Any thoughts?

Personally, I've always been leary of sharpening in the scanner or camera. As the code has to be stored in firmware, my assumption is that the code has to be kept rather simple. I assume that the code in Photoshop has more "room" for sophistication. But, I might be deluding myself, too.

Leave it off - save your sharpening and unsharp masking until its output time. Or do only a small bit in Photoshop to get over the scanner's softness - but thats all.
