With a large format camera documentary Humanities [Archive]

Always loved shooting with a large format camera documentary humanities, only one was allowed in the case of shooting the natural state of people and activities, or the combination of natural life still life. Shooting mostly from China Chongqing around the township, about tens of kilometers from the main city in the distance. I hope to share learning, thank you!

Yes. Wonderful series. I particularly enjoy the photos related to the crafts/professions. By themselves they would make a really nice book, and one with an important historic value at that. Besides, the compositions are great as are the tones and rendering of the light. I like them a lot!
Congratulations and sure hope you can carry on that line of work and post them here.
Just out of curiosity, do you handhold your camera or do you use a tripod? I noticed some were taken with a graflex which would suggest handholding but the blacksmith was taken with what I am guessing is a Toyo which lends itself much worse for handholding, I guess.

Reply rcmartins question: I have been the camera on a tripod shooting, the first using graflex4X5 camera, now using TOYO 45CF camera, tripod material is carbon fiber. Because the town is generally not a gale, and the camera angle is not very high, stability is no problem, while ensuring lightweight, can be used with one hand holding a walk in the town.

Junsong, thank you for your reply and for the documentary photo.
Again, my sincere appreciation for your work both from the photographic quality viewpoint and from the ethnographic study viewpoint. On this last viewpoint I would like to add a special appreciation for the fact that the photographs that you take portray dignified human beings that are clearly comfortable and pleased with being photographed. Individuals are well contextualised in the environments. You have my respect and appreciation for avoiding the exploitation of human condition that sometimes takes place in furtive street photography.
Congratulations!!!!
On a different note, my wife and youngest child have started learning simplified Chinese. They have only two months of learning but are loving it and for sure a trip to China will take place sometime in the future :)

It can convey a sense of respect and sense of ritual and also includes a rich environment, and the environment in the human, interpersonal relationships. When shooting, not everyone is willing to face the camera. I respect them very often. If the other party do not want to, I do not shoot. But a friendly smile and simple communication, most people will not mind. At this time, I will wait for them to lose curiosity and tension, the photographed natural state. I photographed this topic today about three years, on average, about once a month to film the surrounding towns, and feel good air and friendly people, I am enjoying this way. 'Life' is always shoot endless theme.

In recent years, because of work and family busy, I didn't use a large format camera to shoot. Recently I picked up my 4X5 camera and recorded my hometown of Chongqing. I recorded the people and the environment here. They are so natural and wild. With a large format camera, I feel like I am taking pictures.

Thank you very much for your appreciation. I first used a Graflex 4X5 camera, later I used TOYO45CF, and now I use a Frica4X5 camera. This is a wide-angle camera that does not need to be folded. The camera track is divided into three parts and the longest can use 200mm lens. But I mainly use three lenses of 90mm \ 110mm \ 150mm. I am very satisfied with it, it is very convenient to not fold it, the movement of the wide-angle lens is very large, the front group is powerful, and the rear group can be translated up and down. The Frica camera factory is located in Shanghai, China. The owner designs and produces it and currently only sells it in China.

It allows me to wait and capture the moment when the character's personality is expressed. These characters and environments in my hometown will disappear in the future. This really looks the best of classical photography, the remaining last masterpieces. But they're recent, love this! It's great to see you making the effort to work with the slow and cumbersome old processes. And it's all worth it, seeing this!

Hello Tin Can, this camera is indeed very useful at the moment. I will stick to shooting the people and environment in my hometown, but my work is very busy and I cannot update it frequently.
