View Full Version : List of 8x10 Field Cameras

For those of you who might be in the market for an 8x10 field camera, I created this spreadsheet 2 years ago when I was in the market so I could easily compare cameras. I've updated the prices recently for a friend, so I thought I would post it on the forum.

The list only covers field cameras with a maximum extension no less than 600mm, as I was not interested in any of the wide-angle designs that some camera makers produce. (I also included only the mahogany version of Ebony's 8x10 offerings since everything would be the same except for weight, and I didn't see the point in duplication).

See the links below. Feel free to download the excel version if you want to modify the list.

The question is did you sell your house and buy the SU810U? ;)

Thanks for sharing, Daniel. This could really be helpful to someone looking for an 8x10.

Nope, it ended up being the RW810. I don't regret it. The only thing I miss is shift.

Nice list for anyone buying an 8x10.

My Shen Hao FCL does have levels on the rear board.

This is amazingly helpful. Thank you very much.

A thought - put it up on Google as a document we can add to, but not modify (if possible).
I could add three more 8x10 cameras, and others probably can as well.

Just let me know what I'm missing and I'll add them. Some info may be incorrect, so feel free to let me know if there are errors as well.

Okay, the spreadsheet is added to Google Docs. Tachihara 8x10 double and triple extension cameras have been added, and the level on the FCL's rear standard has been corrected.

Here's the Google Spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlmGTdS5xjvDdExZdXlnaFNwTkhGOW93allwS3ppUFE&usp=sharing)version if anyone wants to contribute info.

You are missing Deardorff.

dperez

Yea, originally I was only concerned about cameras that were available new from the manufacturer, but I have wavered a bit from that. The Deardorff V8 has been added.

you CAN buy a new dorff, just don't ask the folks you've sent them money lately!

Yea, I know. I was going to make a joke about it, but hesitated cause I thought someone might start the flame machine up.

This is good info, even if you aren't planning to buy an 8x10. It puts my camera into perspective.
I did something similar before I took the plunge, but only compared against a small number of cameras.
Thank you.

Daniel,
Excellent list, thanks for doing the research.
I was wondering if you might like to add the Toyo 810M's successor, the MII, which is still available new.

dperez

Ari, the one listed is the MII, the column width was too narrow to see the MII, I'll fix it soon.

Daniel, thank you for the list.

Some statistics:

cameras under 4Kg (8.8lbs) just 4
cameras under 3Kg (6.6lbs) just 1

I recently have added a 5x7 back to my rittreck. So I can use 4x5 and 5x7. And weight is around 4kg (8.8lbs).

I know that Rittreck also has a 8x10 back, but this back is very bulky (I have read that it extends lenght around 100mm to allow 8x10 format).

I am looking alternatives and I have seen some Nagaokas recently. Please could someone add detailed specifications of Nagaoka (It looks that this cameras has several different models so its difficult to read old post and make conclusions)

Thanks

Lotus view camera (http://www.lotusviewcamera.at/cameras/lovica_8x10_e.html) and Argentum camera (http://www.argentumcamera.com/eng/pages/cameras/explorator_eng.htm)
the argentum's don't do 24" lenses so they don't meet his criteria or mine for that matter, pretty limited usage.

A useful addition would be a listing of the cameras with asymmetrical rear swing.

Wehman and Ritter have that feature which I find very convenient.

No Giballini

No VCH (this might be the wrong acronym)
No Richard Ritter

Also I would put a serious warning on the Deardorff from people getting screwed over by Barry Cochran

Every time I click on it I get

Somehow in google spreads it says "the file is in trash, do you want to make a copy?" etc - is it me or something should be done by the owner of the file?

------------------------------
So which one is the winner? May be we can say that for a category.. like "best overall" or "the one with more controls", "best budget" or "best money can buy"))
