How do you find models? How much, if any do they cost and what do they do? Good, bad, or crazy?

How do you find models? How much, if any do they cost and what do they do? Good, bad, or crazy?

Nearly all of the people I work with are friends, or friends of friends, and I tend to find that's how I find my favorite models. With that you get the benefit of working with people who trust you and who you are able to trust-- and that goes a long way to make the results more successful. Beyond immediate connections, the Model Mayhem website is a reasonable place to look. You can often find local people to work with, but that's often kind of hit or miss. The main problem I've had there is less established models flaking out and canceling shoots at the last minute, which is fine and happens, but it can be annoying. The more established models who use the site as a way to earn a living, like Sierra McKenzie above, are very professional, punctual, courteous, often extremely charming... and can bring a lot of their experience to a shoot making it easier for a photographer. That does often come at a cost though. The two freelance models I've worked with charge $100/hr as their base rate. That can be negotiable depending on a whole variety of factors like how good or established of a photographer you are, whether the models like your work, and how long the shoot is. I've seen others charging $50-$75/hr. So far I've not had any bad experiences with people I've worked with, but I'm a fairly decent judge of character, so maybe I just avoid people who might be difficult to work with.

that might need to be moved to the "nudes" images

Why? Is there some rule against nudes in other threads?

Seems to me it's clearly both a nude and a portrait so it could be legitimately posted in either thread, or both. (Of course, ANY nude is probably a portrait.)

And it's one I quite like. It's dominated by the high tones with the background of quite low values, not a lot of middle tones yet not excessively contrasty. The woman is attractive and curvy. To me both the model and the photograph have a "classic elegance" look to them.

I don't have a problem with it but I was showing my young son a picture of his cousin that I took and posted on here and I scrolled down and bam!! I wasn't expecting to see a naked woman standing in a doorway and neither was he. I don't want to start anything and didn't mean to if I did, but I just don't think nudity is appropriate in the portraits section, just my opinion. As far as the image goes, it is excellent, but i really don't think an eleven year old boy is going to notice its tonal range. lol.

I have young children and I agree it's best that nudity is kept within NSFW threads, as I don't like surprises either. I'm sure anyone who likes to access the site from their workplace would agree too.

If you think that's the 1st or last naked woman your "11 year old" boy has/will see then your fooling yourself. Plus at 11 years of age maybe it was a good time to talk about the difference between nude art or pornography. This was art with out a doubt. One more thing, do you let or does he play video games like Doom or other shooter/kill games. Now That's something to worry about.

I'm sorry but nudes should stay in the "nude" thread. Discussions of whether or not an 11-year-old has seen or not seen it already is NOT the point. Unless there is some php script that can mark and hide NSFW images unless you "allow" or something? Regardless - there are many places where one might be browsing the forum and not want to scroll past any nude, artsy or not.

I also take offense at the jab at video games. I played Doom a lot as a young boy and I'm a perfectly normal guy now (and I still play video games, ironically not shooters though).

12-Jun-2013, 08:42
Why have separate "Nudes" and "Portraits" threads if there is going to be no distinction? I don't browse the Nudes thread, not because I am a prude or have my head buried in the sand about what my teen boys have or will see, but because it isn't the kind of art I am interested in. I am also cognizant of the fact that there are people in the world who don't appreciate nudes of any sort because of religious or other moral convictions. I would love for those folks to feel like they can browse the Portraits thread without the worry of being surprised by a nude. If they can't feel safe doing that, then they go away and take their art and perspectives with them. Then this whole forum is poorer for it. Now maybe some here have no tolerance for people who aren't open to any and all kinds of art, but that is a narrow minded view that I think we need not promote. This discussion has been had in so many places, I can't believe people are still putting nudes into general threads. I think Ben has a great artistic talent, but this image clearly belongs in the Nudes thread and the mods should have caught it early and avoided this whole thing.

Please save us from religion, morals and some one culture's definition of work safe. This is an appalling promotion of censorship.
Or keep your young children out of museum and pick the most restrictive of the world's culture's definition of work or young child safe and run with that. Perhaps the Chinese government or the Saudi government will advise what is work safe.

Yeah, having just signed the airport free WiFi agreement (without reading it) to log on, and with a bunch of stranger's kids and their moms sitting around me at the airport gate, it was uncool to have THREE consequtive quotes that included the nude image. Pretty sporting trying to scroll past them on a slow laptop with no mouse.

Perhaps a simple notation for "mature" threads that might not be suitable for children or workplaces would be a welcome addition.

I think you have a great model to work with here. I thought you mentioned somewhere that you wanted to work on an Alfred Cheney Johnston look. I'm a big fan of Johnston and I think your model Sierra would be absolutely perfect for a Johnston project.

that might need to be moved to the "nudes" images

As far as I know, there's no site policy on that sort of thing, but I've no problems with deferring to the judgement of the site moderators either. I have seen other risqué work posted in the portraits threads before, and in various other non-nude threads, so it didn't even cross my mind that it'd be an issue for anyone. (As contemporary imagery goes, this is about as benign as it gets.)

My own thoughts are also that imagery depicting someone naked or semi-nude doesn't automatically disqualify it from being considered from being categorized otherwise--or that the nudity trumps all other aspects of the image. But if others' sensibilities and comfort levels with nudity, for whatever reasons, means this kind of image is unwelcome in a portraits thread, then it's not going to hurt my feelings any.

Ben, excellent, beautifully composed, and a change from your style many of us quickly recognize. I really like the repeated angular curve begun at the top archway, then her left inside arm, right arm, then right and left side of her waist, right underarm, upper thighs, eye brows, etc.

I think you have a great model to work with here. I thought you mentioned somewhere that you wanted to work on an Alfred Cheney Johnston look. I'm a big fan of Johnston and I think your model Sierra would be absolutely perfect for a Johnston project.

If you go back a few pages to this (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?103968-June-2013-Portraits&p=1034777&viewfull=1#post1034777) you can see a fairly simple example. She definitely is a very good model for that kind of thing. Unfortunately though Sierra's from Seattle, which is very far away from where I live. She only just happened to be in town for other reasons. I do have other models and friends really interested in the project, more than I can accomodate really (which is a great problem to have), so I've a full summer ahead of me. I just wish 8x10 film wasn't so expensive!

The forum doesn't have an explicit rule here. Because some nudes are portraits - and some portraits are nudes - the distinction can often be a blurry one.

I had a quick look through some previous portrait threads and found some nude and semi-nudes, but no complaints.

That being said, we have a thread for nudes and it makes sense to put nudes there.

I have started a separate thread in the Feedback section, on this topic. See http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?104316-Should-nudes-be-allowed-in-the-Portraits-thread

Very nice. I like the first one the best. The drain pipe is an unnecessary compositional element. The first one seems timeless and the light is soft and the background seems softer than the others for some reason. I like the third as well, especially if you cropped out the pipe. You can probably do equally good or better without the disc. you're off to a good start; keep at it.

I tought about the pipe in or out the frame, and I compose whit for some feeling of balancing weights. But it is a good question... I could crop afther the shot, if i shot with it. I'm afraid to soften more than that without the disk, I'm a little bit conservative about the softness, I'll try a different light instead, like the other picture of the trees, if you remember the picture.
Thanks for the appreciation and comments, it helps!

Dangerous thoughts.... There is a soft focus sales thread here. Check my posts or flickr stream to see what I've used. The fuji tends to be one of the more conservative lenses in terms of softness and it's priced right.

If you have a shutter on your camera: reinhold's wollaston meniscus. cheap and versatile and good.
Also jim galli here makes lens/shutter combos for sale
old soft focus barrel lenses:
wollensak verito
spencer port-land
magnifying glass or closeup lens in cardboard tube.

old soft focus lenses in shutter:
kodak 305 portrait (for 4x5, 5x7, 8x10)
imagon
verito

more smooth than soft:
heliar
old rapid rectilinear lenses such as B&L planatograph
triplets such as meyer trioplan, or more expensively cooke.

If you don't mind traveling, there is a workshop on this in Maine in August; see the announcements forum.

Stu is my friend from back home in the UK although he lives here in Sydney now. We hadn't seen each other in about 5 years and bumped into each other in Sydney, which was very bizarre but amazing to see him again. Tori is his fiancé.

I captured this image on Saturday with my Tachi 8x10 using TMax 400 (pushed to 800) at f/11 after spending an afternoon mostly with a beer in my hand. So I was surprised that a. the exposure was pretty much dead on, b. it's pretty sharp (I didn't use a loupe), c. the grain is very fine for 400 film pushed to 800. I developed it in D76 for 10 minutes.

This is the first photograph I've shot featuring people, using a large format camera so overall I'm really pleased with the result. Tori is a fair bit softer than Stu in this scan - I'm not 100% sure if it's because of a shallow depth of field or possible the sheet wasn't completely flat in the scanner. Anyway, I'm going to rescan and try again.

And you should be pleased. Looks far better than my first portrait. I haven't yet tried again. It's quite hard to remember all the portrait tricks when you are taking it with a LF camera and can't change positions easy after you've already had them waiting for a few minutes in front of the camera. Being prepared before people step into the photo is what I have learned so far.
Yours looks nice and relaxed, that's always important. Only thing I can see to improve this is maybe to have some fill in the eyes/face (reflector?) or placing the skin a zone higher and perhaps avoid the 'antlers' next time... :)

Greg, Rodinal (or Adonal as the Adox version is now branded in the US) is my personal favorite to work with, but you know how it is with film and developers. I'm familiar enough now with the materials and the developer that I have kind of an innate sense of their limitations when it comes to working with them. But I will say that it's a very forgiving developer, and for tray processing--which how I process my film--it doesn't irritate or stain my bare hands.

Ben, As always you show how large format does it different. This is beautiful example.

Thanks! And I'd add that it also shows off some of the wonderful benefits of working with junky old lenses on large format. Coated glass... Bah!

its a steampunk story i shot on this visit to Russia. We did prequel to story that was shot year and half ago.. This time we expanded locations from 2 to 3, and resulting story is about 40 frames, which would be a bit too hard to do with colour film on 4x5 (too many things go wrong on frames when many people involved so with digital i can have luxury of duplicate frames) :) So i just shot some film frames for folks who were involved , for hell of it :)

Sure no problem! I was using strobes (a total of 12000 joules in three floor packs). You need a LOT of light to shoot full length in the studio using strobes with wet plate. I needed flash to freeze the movement of the dog. In saying that I was going for an Irving Penn feel with this one (minus the work attire and add one dog) and played with the lighting to create a partial silhouette on the guy while still lighting the dog. I had 3000ws on the dog and 3000ws (6000ws pack) on the back of the model acting as keys lights. I split a 3000ws pack for slight fill (leveling out the light) on the other side. I split another 3000ws pack on the background evenly lighting it on both sides.

To be honest if you're just getting started, you should buy a manual from Mark Osterman, John Coffer or Quinn Jacobson. If you have someone experienced nearby to you, see if you can do a workshop. There are also a few forums on facebook you can join and I think the collodion.com forum Quinn started is still going.

Good luck!

that amount of power of strobes isn't easy to find for me... you rated the collodium about 3-4 iso? Maybe I'll reach a total of 2200 joules splitted in 3\4 bulbs.
you maybe need to shot a f/4 or less... I think I'll try whit sunlight the first times!
thanks for the help, I'm in touch with a guy to attend a collodium workshop before starting it.

The ISO is 1 or slightly less depending on the age of your collodion (it gets slower, weaker and more contrasty with age). Start out just using open shade as it's perfect for wet plate before venturing into the studio setting. You can use continuous lights or strobes inside and the output will depend on your formulas (but you will always need a fair bit). You really don't need the amount of light that I was using for head and shoulders shots in the studio. The light fall-off is dramatic with WP so I used big output for this one to cover a full length portrait and to light the background. Fast lenses are handy and I think it was wet platers that really kicked the petzval lens purchase virus into gear. In saying that I often shoot smaller apertures than f8 outside so whatever you have is good enough to start you off.

One last thing, this process is orthochromatic not panchromatic so you need to focus on working in the blue and UV end of the spectrum. That means that if you do decide to use your strobes, remove or replace the glass tube protector if it's UV coated.

Nice one, Ben! Great light.

Thanks! It's a fairly basic setup that I've played around with for a few non-soft-focus images, but I thought the light would work well with soft-focus. The model is seated between two tall windows that are illuminating her from behind, and then I hung a dark backdrop on the wall between the windows to use as a backdrop. The fill light comes solely from the reflected light off the light-colored walls of the studio interior. Probably a white reflector would've been useful to lighten her face up a bit, but I also don't dislike the more shadowed look here.

The more studio work I do, the more I understand why photographers have assistants! Having only two hands and only being able to be in once place in any given moment is just not enough a lot of the time.
