Horseman Bellows Connector

I just got a used Horseman Bellows Connector. It seems to work fine but I have a question. Every picture of this gizmo I have ever seen, including the one in the Horseman catalogue, shows a second bar supplied with the connector. I just can't figure out the use for this additional piece. Anyone have one that can help?
